Subj: BiBi.. :(

I'm sure by now most of you are aware through some source or
another that I am moving, yep, that's right, I'm leaving this
hell hole called Sydney and moving to an even worse one called
Melbourne. For those of you that don't know why, I'm going to
live with my Boi, which unfortionately means leaving
everything I have here. [Which isn't much anymore anyway].
Alot of you have been friends to me, some even good ones, you
know who you are and I'll miss you dearly, if you want to
contact me I'm sure you have my mobile number, or will find
a way to get it, and then I'll give you my address or home
number there. For the rest of you, you might be happy to see
me leave, but you just need to either grow up or fuck off [Or
Both :)] You also know who you are, but I don't hate any of
you and it's been nice getting to know everyone. Incase you
want to organise a party AFTER I've gone [Grin] Seeing you
might all be happy to get rid of me, I'll be going between
Half way March and the end of April [Depending on my work].
I might one day drive up again and drop in on a movienite, or
maybe go to one before I leave. [Or even run up the phone
bill in Melbourne]. I'm not sure what else to say, so I'll
say Bye now, and that's it's a shame I couldn't manage to
patch things up with a few of you before I left, but No
matter, Hope you all have Wonderful lives, and that things
turn out how you want them to. Good Luck with everything and
take care !
Love you all !

Soph ..! :)

I can't believe I'm doing this, I HATE MELBOURNE ! ARGH !

Subj: Tip Of The Week

It's come to my attention that there are a lot of new and old
functions on Active which a lot of callers, especially the newer ones,
are unaware of!!

This is solely due to the lack of documentation! So, the natural
assumption is that I'm going to document every function on Active for
you????????????? Not a chance, baby :)

Instead, every now and then, I'll throw a little message into /Active
announcing the tip of the week :) A little like the "Did you know.."'s
in Microsoft products :) :)

**********************************************************************

So, for this week, did you know about Generic Actions and how to put
colours <both foreground and background> into them? and also how to
view them??????

Ok, in the chat channels, you can basically make up, in a sense, your
own action by preceding a line with "GA".. for example "ga is getting
confused" would show up as "Nickz is getting confused" to everyone else
in chat. The default colour is light purple. You can change the
colours using the @ character followed by a number, where the numbers
are 1 to 7 and correspond with the colours Red, Green, Yellow, Blue,
Purple, Cyan, and White. Furthermore, you can add Background colours
using the ~ character followed by a number from 0 to 7. 0 resets the
background to black.

For example: ga is @2wondering what he's ~3@7DOING~0@2 here!!

Would show as:

Nickz is wondering what he's DOING here!!

Furthermore, you can precede any GA command with "/a " which will show
you what it looks like, just like you can with ordinary action words.

That was your friendly tip for the day :) If you didn't know it,
good. If you did, then naff off :)

...NickZ <Ok, so I'm doing this for my enjoyment, not yours :)>

Hi Ducky.

Ok.. how did Active all start.. Well, I'll just start rambling the
story away and you can make what you want with it :)

It all started before 1991, when I helped JimZ and YvonneZ
play around with a little BBS called Arcadia. It ran on
a microbee and because of this we had lots of people helping out just to
keep it running. So I guess it became a BBS which was run as much by
the users as the Sysops themselves.

Anyway, Jim then suggested the idea of me and him starting a
multi-line BBS, which was both for chat and messages. They were usually
just one or the other, chat or messages. He asked if I wanted it at my
place and I said no :) So we set it up at his instead. He purchased
most of the equipment at the time and we called it Active Entertainment
BBS.

The official opening day would have been somewhere between the 4th and
the 9th of April 1991. It started with just 4 telephone lines and was
quite popular. JimZ and I used to call a multiline BBS known as TiSA
BBS (TeleInfo Systems Australia). We started Active a couple of months
before TiSA BBS went down, so I guess we got a lot of it's callers.

Anyway, the plan was to offer a good chat and messages BBS which was
as close to free access as possible, and letting the users have as much
say in the running of the system as possible. After all, the system is
there for them (not us), and they have to like it, so they should be the
ones with the say. We didn't start Active to make money. We started it
because we wanted a nice chat/message BBS to use :) :)

So slowly, with what Jim and I knew, and with the input of all the
users, it grew!! "Active" access used to be handed out to users for
free back then. We also encouraged the users to go to events and
what not.

We had a lot of other cosysops in and out through the years as it was
running. Some of which never should have been Co-Sysops :)

Anyway, back then, Active ran on a 286 25mhz I believe(?) (Jim,
correct me where I'm wrong :)). Basically, a very slow computer :)
It's now a 486 DX 2/66, and I suspect will be a Pentium shortly the way
computer prices are going :)

Anyway, a couple of years ago, Jim decided to move to QLD for a while
so I took over the responsibility of Active, and along with other Sysops
such as Voodoo (who is the oldest one left along with me.. No pun
intended) and the help of the users, we ran Active.

JimZ is now known as JimmyZ.

So anyway, around the time I took over, Jim and I were discussing
various access levels. Active was running at a loss up until then.
Users used to donate money every now and then though, but we made it
more of an official thing. If they donate they get "Active" access
permanently, and if they donate again they get "Hyperactive" access for
a year. That way "Active" access is still as close to free as possible,
yet there's always something to be gained from further
donations/sponsorships.

From then on Active pretty much paid it's own way. Any extra money
was used to buy hardware and extra telephone lines, which in turn
encured more costs. So, the rate of money coming in pretty much
dictates the number of lines we have. As for the hardware, well besides
the odd purchases, most of it was donated by the users!! Basically,
Active very much depends on the people who call it to run, which is good
because then everyone plays a part in it. It's not just "mine" or
anything like that. It's *ours*.

Current Sysops/Cosysops are NickZ, Voodoo, MikeZ, David, and Wheels.

Well, almost out of message space. I think i covered most of it. I
hope this helps you with your PIP.

I may actually post this into /Active.

Bye!!

...NickZ.

Subj: Quickscan

Ok, I programmed a few quickscan features over the last month, and
posted these new features into /Suggest, but it seems that quite a few
people are unaware of these features, so I'll post them here as a "Tips
of the month" thing :)

As you have all noticed, the quickscan now shows you the number of NEW
messages in each sig as you get to it. The following commands have been
added which you could use at any message prompt during your quickscan:

* /CHECK - This command causes your quickscan to re-check the current
quickscan sig and shows you the number of NEW unread messages remaining
in that sig.

* /SKIP - This command causes your quickscan to SKIP to the next sig,
leaving the remaining messages as unread so you can pick them up again
during your next quickscan.

* /READ - This command causes your quickscan to SKIP to the next sig,
but marks all the messages in that sig as having been READ, which means
that they won't appear in your next quickscan.

* /VIEW - This command is not a Quickscan feature, but a GLOBAL command
which can be used from ANYWHERE. It allows you to view any message to
or from you, or any public message from ANYWHERE on the system. The
syntax is "/view number /sig", where "number" is the message number you
want to view and "/sig" is the name of the sig which the message is in.
If it's a private message to you, then no /sig name need be supplied.
Note that reading a message in this manner DOES NOT mark the message as
read, and DOES NOT generate a return receipt.

Also, on the Messages Menu, there is a new option "Q" which shows you
how many NEW unread messages there are in each of your Quickscan Sig. A
bit like the [C]heck mail option in private mail, but for public mail.

************************************************************************

While I'm here, I'll also mention a couple of commands you can use in
the Message Editor!! These commands are only valid during the actual
writing of a message. These are old commands and most of you would
already know of them.

* /SHOW - This command shows you the message that you are replying to,
with its line numbers. You can optionally private a line range, for
example "/show 4-13", "/show 7-", "/show -12".

* /QUOTE - This command is similar to the /SHOW command, except it
actually QUOTES the text and dumps it into your message, prefixing each
line with "> ". This is basically used for quoting lines out of the
message you are replying to. Note that you *MUST* supply an argument
with the /QUOTE command. ie. /QUOTE on its own won't work to prevent
lazy people from quoting entire messages all the time. You *MUST*
specify a range.

* /FREE - This command shows you the number of free bytes remaining in
the message you are writing. One byte equates to one character in your
message. All messages can be up to 4096 bytes in size, and the /FREE
command should reflect this.

* /X - This command allows you to EXIT a message immediately. No Y/N
prompt will be displayed.

* /S - This command allows you to SAVE a message immediately.

Well, I think that just about covers the tips of the month for now. Oh,
and remember that during message reading, you can type "#number" to jump
straight to that message number <so long as it is in the current sig>.

I hope these tips have been helpful!!

Subj: **CHANGES**

Ok, here is the latest change to Active. There's only the one:

* 3-WAY SCHAT, yep, that's right.. You can now have a 3-WAY split
screen chat.. you and two other people... I've only just written it and
it's hard to test locally, so, I hope it's totally bug proof.

Basically, just type SCHAT followed by the two people you want to
schat.. theother two peopledo similar.. ie:

SCHAT Zuid Spychoo

..and Zuid then types:

SCHAT Spychoo NickZ

..and Spychoo then types:

SCHAT NickZ Zuid

and you're in! :) Well, into 3-way split screen chat :)

Now people, *PLEASE* remember that in split screen chat, for every
character you press, 13 characters of ANSI are also sent, hence, with
three people in a 3-WAy chat, if you all start typig furiously or
holding keys down for the key repeat, at 2400, then it'll simply flood
buffers and you'll lose the odd character.. No real harm though, just,
be gentle with it and it'll be gentle with you :)

...mind you, at 9600 it's beautiful :) :)

i hope you like it, cheers!!

...NickZ.

P.S. Post any complaints to PO Box 33, China :)

************************************** :) ***************************

Ok, I've written Trivial Pursuit for Active!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me explain how it works :)

Anyone who has played Trivial Pursuit on Active before, either using
Zuid's Trivia script, or the Actions, already has a rough idea of how it
works on here! <or David's trivia script :)>

Basically, it's a group of people in a channel, one person <usually
the channel owner> will ask a question, and the first person to type the
correct answer gets a point. The person running the game <Game Master>
is in charge of asking questions, and awarding points.

Basically, the new TRIVIAL PURSUIT options on Active just make this
game easier to play and helps keep track of scores for you. Here is how
it work.

Trivial Pursuit on Active can only be played in a private channel, and
the owner of the channel is automatically the GAME MASTER. That means
that the channel owner has extra commands to award/remove points from a
player and to use the commands to ask questions etc.

Basically, you join a trivia game in a similar way as you would join
poker or othello. All the trivia commands start with the word "TRIV",
just like Poker commands start with "POKER".

To start a game, just go to your private channel and page people
asking if they want to play :)

To join a game, go to that person's channel, and type TRIV JOIN.
This will automatically put you in that person's game. There can be
multiple trivia games, but you can only play in one at a time.

Anyway, go to games and type "TRIV ?" for a list of the available
commands!

This was tested the other night and seems to work fine. There's a
couple of extra commands I would like to add though.

Also, if you're in a game of trivia, you can go to messages etc and
return without it throwing you out of the game. If you log off however,
you will be thrown out of the game.

If you're running a game and log off, everyone playing your game will
be thrown out of the game :)

That's about it!!

Play and Enjoy :)

...NickZ.

P.S. *Everyone* has access to start or join a game. No special access
is required! <you just need to be verified :)>. You don't have to
issue any special commands to start a game either. Anyone in your
channel can simply type "TRIV JOIN" to join a game of Triv in your
channel!

Subj: ** TRIVA CHANGES!!!

******** :) ********

Ok, I've made some changes/additions to the Trivial Pursuit game!

Firstly, you can now type "TRIV SCORE userid" to see the score of that
userid only. This is handy when you're in a large game and want to
check your rival's score quickly before the next question :)

For the Game Master, I coded a "TRIV CORRECT" command which says
something like "*** SOMEONE GOT IT RIGHT!!!". This was purely to humour
David :)

I coded a "TRIV OBJECT" command which says something like "*** Userid
OBJECTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". This was purely to humour Primate :)

I changed the colour of the QUESTIONS text from dark grey to bright
cyan. I hope this isn't too annoying, but I found that the question
text tended to blend in with the rest of chat and was easily missed.
Now that it's cyan, it stands out :)

I fixed a bug where if you were in schat <or similar> during a game
and the game master logged off, you would get text dumped into your
schat telling you so, which was ugly :) So I prevented that from
happening.

and doh! I forgot to make TRIV show up in the "/s" :( Well, I didn't
have much time to code and upload b4 cleanup anyway <shrug>. Maybe next
time.

Anyway, Play and Enjoy :)

FILE: Annual Active Awards II

Heideli hey.

As you may have worked out, Maccad hasn't been calling regularly as
of late, and if you care to remember back to about a year ago (for
those of you who can remember more than a few minutes...), he
conducted the First Annual Active Awards. So, since he isn't around
to do it, I have asked around to get all the categories people could
remember. So, if you could take some time out of your ever so hectic
schedules, and fill in a general list, it would be greatly
appreciated.

Just a few rules...
1. You can _NOT_ vote for yourself.
2. False votes shall not be included.
3. All replies MUST be done privately. Public replies might not be
included.
4. You MUST make three votes per category.
5. All votes must be in by the end of Sunday, 25th of January.
6. Have fun!

Uhm, just a few more additions. Golden D00d refers to males AND
females. Last year there wasn't a Golden D00dette, so I'm not doing
it this year either, and making Golden D00d for both. Also, for
things like "Cutest person", you DON'T have to vote for both male and
female.

The categories are in the attatched file. Do an ascii download,
answer in a text editor of some description, and upload to me
privately. And now, MAY THE VOTING, COMMENCE!!!

-Mab!

P.S. All replies will be kept _100%_ private. This IS a survey after
all, and a few people may not want everyone knowing who they're horny
for etc...

Subj: *** Active Changes ***

Ok, you will be happy to hear <maybe> that I've been programming
Active again :) Following is a list of changes to Active:

*** Trivial Pursuit Changes ***

* Fixed a bug where "TRIV SCORE <userid>" wasn't working for players

* The /Gamescan command now shows up people playing Trivia

* A "TRIV H: <hint...>" command has been added so that the game master
can give hints to questions.

* "TRIV SCORE" can now be used by people not playing any triv games.
Basically it shows the scores of the private channel you're in.

* The Trivia Score table now has an EXTRA COLUMN in it which shows how
many minutes each player has been in that game for! The minutes reset
for a user when he/she quits/joins a game, or when the scores are all
reset by the game master.

* A "TRIV WIN <player>" command has been added to notify all the players
that someone has won!!!!

* A "TRIV RULE <text...>" command has been added to humour Johnz :) So
that he can use it to state game rules and important decisions.
Basically it just shows the "text..." stuff to the players in the
channel.

* I inerted a blank line before the TRIV QUESTION so that it stands out
a little better.

* I updated the Triv Help to reflect the above changes.

*** General Active Changes ***

* I coded it so that if Actions are turned off, you can precede an
action word with "#" so that it still works. This is useful for
trivia games when you have actions turned off. eg. "#kick chucky"

* I took out the temporary changes I made two weeks ago when I set
Active's date wrong my accident :) Now all old messages will be
purged again in the normal way :)

* I fixed a bug where a Sigop could award a private message :) The bug
had been there for years, but nobody noticed it until recently :)

* I rewrote/changed several fuctions on Active to give us a little bit
more free ram, to accomodate the above changes. You shouldn't notice
any difference. The functions that I improved were in schat, actions,
Othello, trivia, and hotkeys in Settings. If you notice any weird new
bugs in these areas, let me know :)

*** Other Changes ***

* Basically made a change to Dungeon, and several changes to Sysopy
things, which I won't bother listing in a public message :)

Well, that's basically it!!

Chances of a bug: 25% :)
Chances of a crash: 5% :)

Cheers!

FILE: Top 100 Message Writers

I decided to put together a Top 100 list of the users who have written
the most public messages.

Now, this includes all public sigs which are not private. The only
semi-private sigs included in this list were /Girls and /Sex, but only
because they have a large number of users with access.

So here it is, the top 100 message writers on Active :)

Just ASCII Download the file to view it.

Subj: Sponsoring

Hello :) You should all read this :)

This is just a general little message about sponsoring, mostly due to
the fact that there's quite a few new users logging on <verified>
recently, and such "sponsoring" information isn't really avilable for
them.

A general outline of Active is that it's not a Games or Files BBS.
Mostly, it's a BBS for socialising. Yes, the BBS is centered mostly
around events and meetings where people can actually do things
together and NOT just sit at a computer all day typing away :) As it
turns out, a lot of the users get to know eachother in person, and rather
than Active being just another computer and modems, it's more a large
group of people, and the hardware <Active> itself is just a means of
communication!

If you're interested in getting involved and putting faces to names,
then the best way is to come along to a movienight <movienight I hear
you ask??>.. Yes, that's right. Once a month, on the second Saturday of
every month, a large group of us meet at Town Hall Steps at 6:30pm,
after which we either go off to see a movie, to eat, to drink, to time
zone, or whatever grabs your fancy.

The next Movienight is actually *this* Saturday, the 9th of May, so if
you're interested in meeting some of us, you should definitely come
along. Even if it's just for 30 mins at Town Hall Steps to say "Hi" and
"Bye"! :)

As for sponsoring, well "N" access is quite good.. The point of Active
is to make it as free as possible. Unfortunately, it still needs
sponsorships to pay for expenses, and recently, I've had to cover these
expenses myself.

It's not so much a "pay for what you get" system, but rather if you
use the BBS, and like the BBS, and get a lot of enjoyment or friends or
whatever out of the BBS, then donate $43 our way. Basically, it's
everyone's board, and the concept is that we all chip in to keep it
going. Even if you only call 30 mins a day, if you've been doing that
for 2 years, I think you've gotten *more* that $43 worth out of the
system, so, help us by sponsoring a little our way.

For those who do donate $43, they're upgraded to "Active" access
permanently. That means 10000 credits a day and 5000 per logon <instead
of 6000 and 3000>, it means a small credit bank of 2000 creds, it means
you can tranfer credits to others <hence more likely to receive them
back when you need them>, access to multipage, access to page all,
access to relog so a friend <who is over> can log on, and a private
action! Not to mention the status of having the "A" next to your name
of course :)

Either way, if you're interested in taking a greater part in this BBS,
check out option 2 in "Information Menu" for details. or, even if
you've been using the BBS for years, you should give us a hand in return
for what Active's done for you. Some go through $43 in a single night
:) Unfortunately, it doesn't come with a set of steak knives though,
sorry :( :)

Either way, if you're interested in sponsoring, you can either mail to
the PO box, or hand the money/cheque to me in person at the Next
Movienight!

So, yeah, I'll be at the next Movienight if you're interested. Don't
wait for me to approach you though, you'll have to approach me :)

I know a lot of "N" users <specifically> have been meaning to sponsor
for quite some time now, but haven't gotten around to it. Well, this
Movienight is a good time to get around to it.

Active costs to run, and currently I'm having to support it out of my
own pocket. I don't mind doing so, although a little help in this area
would in fact be *more* than appreciated.

Just think what Active's given you, and what you've given it.

Cheers!!

...NickZ.

> Not go the way of AR. There's a distinct difference between allowing
> net access out, and allowing it in.

There's several topics to cover.. this first one will be:

** What Affect Will Telnet Have On Active? **
---------------------------------------------

Ok.. where to start. Firstly, a brief outline of Active itself and
why it has been a success. Basically, regardless of how you look at it,
Active is very much a local clique of people. The point is that you can
log onto Active and immediately have contact with atleast 8 people that
you know personally and socialise with! It's a central communication
center for groups of personal friends <of which, most were made via
Active>. Activites see one another off the BBS as often as they see
eachother on the BBS! Also, the responses and people are fairly
"Active".. that is, on mIRC, you could be in a channel with 20 people
and have to wait 5 mins for a reply! As opposed to Active where you
page all with "What should I do tonight?" and hence be swamped with
pages for the next 10 minutes :)

Why are Active and mIRC so different? Welllllllll... mIRC is the
net... With mIRC, people will be doing their work or whatever with the
NET in the background.. They will have mail running, a browser, ICQ,
mIRC, and various other bits and pieces.. Trying to have a conversation
with someone on mIRC is like trying to talk to someone who nods off to
sleep 80% of the time :) A /Whois often shows times in excess of 20
minutes.

If Active were purely on the net, then Active would hence become just
another Net program people use in the background :( They may be
connected more often, but really, they would only be attentive about 20%
of the time if that :( Games chat would just be like an mIRC chat
channel, that is, groups of people sitting there while browsing the
net, and not even using the system. Further more, it will encourage
people to just stay on Active whether they're using it or not.. Most
will probably even forget they're on Active whilst doing a little
browsing.

See, Active is fully in your face!! You dial in directly and you're
away from the "other life", and from the net. A single connection and
on here you have the chat, the mail, or whatever else you need for
socialising. It's fully in your face and you're fully attentive whilst
using it <as compared to mIRC or ICQ>.

That is *ONE* major part alone which makes Active so "active", and
encourages full on user interaction.

The second part is that Active is very much a local group of people.
Anyone who can dial Active is no more than 30mins drive away in most
cases, and most have attended a Movienight at least once in their lives.
If it were purely a Telnet system though, then you would have people
calling from all over the world! The 14 telnet lines would be full with
Sven from Norway and Theo from Greece! Neither of which you know
personal nor would ever be able to know personally. Also, verification
of such people would basically be completely impossible :(

We could however have Telnet *and* direct dial lines, and only those
who have sign-up using direct lines, been verified, and perhaps even
sponsored, have access to Telnet in. But, for now we're discussing
having Active purely on the net, and even then, the first point
mentioned in this message still applies.

The benefit of Active being on the net is that the die hard internet
people can easily Telnet to Active when they need to, and they have all
the other net facilities avilable at their finger tips. But then, this
isn't necessarily what we need, and it would just detract from the BBS
itself.

Out of message space!

To be continued :)

<continued...>

So to summarise:

Active has been a success merely because it's a world of its own.
When you log onto Active, that's exactly what you do, log onto Active..
Not log onto the net! No distractions, no Svens, and no Theos! <you may
have the odd Bandito though :)>.. It's basically non-stop paging with
people that you know and are likely to see within the next day or two.
It's a BBS created for a little social community of its own, and this
community exist purely because Active is "Not On The Net"!

If people wanted to be part of the huge "unknown" internet community,
then, they wouldn't have called Active to begin with :)

The internet does have lots of benefits, but Active also has benefits
that can't be reproduced on the net, and doing so would destroy any
differences that do in fact exist between Active and the net.

Basically, if Active were purely on the net, then, why would it be any
different to mIRC? We might as well just not have Active and use the
net instead.

Activites don't *need* Active to be able to communicate onthe net if
they wish. But having Active as a seperate entity is what made it exist
to begin with.

Remember, Active is more than just wires and modems. It's a group of
"Activites" :)

Ok, the next message will cover a few other aspects of your message.

...NickZ <I feel like Goktimus - not literally though :)>

Now we'll discuss the ability to have Active as it is, and also offer
Telnet ability for verified sponsors of the BBS only:

** Why Can't We Have The Odd Telnet Line Though? **
---------------------------------------------------

Well, we can very much have that, and still keep Active as a seperate
entity! But, this isn't that simple a task to achieve.

One problem is that even now, Sponsorship is very low on Active. Last
month I covered Active's phone bill out of my pocket, $190. This month
it's still short about $60, which I will have to cover again! There is
no doubt that Active is low on sponsor money, but there's also no doubt
that I will keep it going, even if I have to sell my body organs to do
so :) But, hopefully with a little sponsor help from the users, I won't
need to have my spare kidney removed :) But, this is a subject on its
own and will be left for another message of its own :)

So firstly, the cost of being on the net is almost equal to the cost of
maintaining 14 phone lines. To provide BOTH telnet and local lines
would affectively *double* Active's ongoing costs. Considering it's
struggling to pay the bills as it is, allowing telnet <and doubling our
expensive> would be nothing short of suicidal!

Further more, with the money it would cost to put Active on the net,
with that money we could instead get another 14 lines and have 28
local dial in lines. Not that we want it, need it, nor can afford it;
it's merely an indication of the costs involved in making Active
Telnet-able.

Secondly, there's physical limitations to putting Active on the net.
Active *IS* a DOS based program. Putting it on the net would involve
programming a full TCP/IP protocal and all the standard packet handling
functions for Active. Some software, like Worldgroup, I believe are
made to run under Win NT(?), where they can simply dial the net under
NT, and then use the standard NT functions to communicate and allow
Telnet ability. To simulate this with Active would be near impossible.
There is always the option of just running Active on new software like
WorldGroup.. But, this would mean we lose *ALL* the changes I've
made to Active over the 7 years, including /View, online credit system,
message quoting functionality, multi-pages, action changes, hotkeys, the
works.. and Active would just look like Aus Connect. If we wanted Aus
Connect, then we wouldn't be on Active right now :) <except for the
fact that it went down... I wonder why :)>

So, at this point in time, we can't *simply* allow "Telnet into
Active"... it would require new software, a complete and total change to
Active, many many many many hours of research and the like, and a hell
of a lot of Money that Active simply cannot afford.

So, although Telnet would be nice to have, it's simply not practical
at this day and age. and unless we *HAVE* to go to the net to survive,
then we will keep it as it is.. a BBS.

Besides, anyone logged onto Active via the telnet lines will just be
20% attentive anyway <refer to previous messages>.

The next message will cover the future of BBSes and the future of
Active itself.

Lets talk about the BBS world now :)

** BBSes Are A Dying Breed! How Long Do We Have, Doctor? **
------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, well as you know, Syndey was flooded with BBSes, and at a time,
some even made money :) Unfortunately, now the Internet has taken over
big time and BBSes are dropping like flies around us.

The Internet has caused every man and his Dog to now have access to
the modem world, but unfortunately it's 99% for the internet, and a lot
of die hard BBS users have also moved there, partly for the WaReZ, D00d!
:) BBSes hence are no longer profitable, and unless they become an ISP
<Internet Provider>, they simply cannot afford to exist. Once they
become an Internet Provider though, they're no longer a BBS.. They just
become Zip.

As good as the Internet is for Work, for files, for research, and for
general browsing, it really does nothing for socialising and for local
social groups <as compared to Active>. But, BBSes are in fact a dying
breed, and it would be very sad to see them go altogether :(

People see BBSes dropping like flies around us and wonder if Active is
next in turn. Well, I do admit that Active's popularity did drop when
the internet came out, but since then <over the last 2 years> it's
stablised!

Why the lack of Sponsor Money then? Well there's a different reason
for that, and that too will be covered in another message :)

But, there's no doubt that Active is still having as many events as
ever, and THS is still just as packed on the second Saturday of every
month! It's still common to get an engaged tone when dialing during
certain peak hour periods, and we still have graveyard callers who stay
online until 6am when cleanup throws them off :) To this day, there
haven't been many other BBSes that have anyone online after about 2am.

The thing is, even though BBSes are sadly dropping around us, it also
means that more BBS users are forced to come to Active. Although the
internet has stolen lots of BBS users, it also means that the Internet
has caused almost everyone to get a modem, and a small percentage of
these people are now using BBSes.

So, so far, and for the above reasons, Active is not *yet* in fear of
losing popularity. However, Sponsor money is a different issue, and
beyond the scope of this message <don't you hate that line in books? :)>

I mean, it could be possible that Active will one day be the last and
only BBS alive in Syndey! But, even if that were the case and even if
the number of BBS users dropped to an all time low, it would also mean
that they would *all* have to call Active :) So either way, it would
still have 300 odd regular BBSers/callers Syndey wide!

What change has the internet had on the quality of BBS callers? Well,
I think it's a bit of an improvement, sort of:

In the past, the only people to have modems were die hard computer
geeks and wierdos :) Hence, BBSes had a large proportion of computer
literate users and almost completely male users. These days, because
everyone has a modem, BBSes <and Active> have a more widespread sample
of the community. I'm sure you've all noticed the number of times that
females have out numbered males in the /# :) We have more computer
illiterate people, yes, but more normal people as well, and more
females, more wogs <that normally wouldn't think of buying a modem>, and
more of the general populous instead of being a thing for "die hard
geeks" only! So although Active has a lot more computer illiterate
users online, I also think it has a better variety of users, and more
females :) It's more of a social group now and less of a computer
group.

The last question is, if Active hasn't dropped much in popularity,
then why the drop in sponsorship?? Well, I will explain:

** Why The Drop In Sponsorship? What Is The Solution? **
---------------------------------------------------------

Well, the drop in sponsorship I feel is partly the fault of me and the
other Sysops.

Active used to have a rotating group of users! As every year passed,
people would leave Active and others would join, and you would have a
new generation of users, and some of the older Activites would stick
around. But basically, if you didn't call for a year and then dialed
back, it would be likely that you knew nobody online, yet everyone
online was still just as much a part of the Active scene as the users
were a year ago! I could get together a group of some of the biggest
past Activites we've ever had <I don't mean big in the literal sense,
DaZZa :)>, and most of you wouldn't even know them!

However, the past 2 years has pretty much had the same
group/generation of Active callers and hasn't changed much.

As good as it is to have a stable group of people that are fully a
part of Active now, it also means less new users. ..and with less new
users comes less sponsor money.

I think a large part of this has simply been our lack of verification
over the last year. 1.5 years ago, David and Wheels did an excellent
job of verifications, and in their short time of being Sysops, each of
them have verified as many users as I have over the 7 years. That is
why although they haven't called much now, their past extreme efforts
haven't and will not go unnoticed <excuse the double negative :)>

During the period that they verified, Active was also very healthy in
sponsorships. New blood means new sponsors :) In fact, with all the
sponsoring <and with the help of Todaytech, a past sponsor>, we managed
to raise $2000 extra for Active! When Active moved 2 years ago, it cost
$2000 and we were back to $0.

Unfortunately, since then, verification has not been one of our
priorities and hence there has been a noticeable drop in Sponsorship and
in new users. Although, there hasn't been much of a drop in popularity.

Recently, I've been doing quite a bit of verification again, as you
have all noticed, but the sponsor benefits of this won't be noticed for
still a few months or more to come.

Now, *although* a lot of you have settled in here, and made yourself a
nice little home, and hence frown at any new users who log on and take
up valuable lines that one of your better friends could be using, also
note that the new users are what is going to save Active's butt! Also,
the new users will be the next generation of Activites to come.

Although I think "screening" of new users is actually somewhat
beneficial to the future quality of callers, *PLEASE* remember that we
*NEED* new users.. both for future sponsors, and also to evolve into the
next generation of Activites!

*THIS* is why I'm so strict on users who abuse new users for no valid
reason! it may be fun to give them all a hard time, and force them to
not sponsor and not return, but a year from now when there's nobody new
to pay the bills, I'll be hunting you down with a shotgun :) So, rather
than actually stressing new users, how about actually helping them,
introducing them, making them feel at home, and giving them a reason to
want to help/sponsor the BBS, for your *own* benefits!????????

Basically, the BBS is as much yours as it is mine. So, try to work
with me in doing everything possible to keep this BBS alive
indefinitely, because I can't do it alone and it would be a real shame
to see it ever go down :(

Cheers!

The very last and very final question of course is:

** How Can I Help Active ?????? **
----------------------------------

Well, there's really only one main way you can help, besides being
*helpful* to new users and thinking in respect of Active as a whole, and
not just about yourself, ... and that is:

Sponsor Active Entertainment BBS!!!!

it's just $43... Whether you *need* the access.. If you've been
meaning to sponsor, then please do it now, as this time of the year is
always a low in sponsorships! Even if it's not for access and simply
just a little money to help! Even if it's just $10 you want to throw
our way for the sake of helping the BBS out!

I could be stuck paying thousands each year to keep Active up.. or,
between the hundreds of regular users, we can simply pay a few dollars
each to keep it going.

So, yes. Basically, Active *DOES* need Sponsor money... it doesn't
need the popularity.. it has that, and still has a few new signups a
day.. more signups than I can keep up with in fact. But what it doesn't
have is the Sponsorship!!!

If you've been here a year, then, please do your little bit and give
us a hand! Because as you know, Active isn't a business. It doen't
make money. I have no reason to keep the BBS going except for the fact
that A) I do not want to see it ever have to go down and B) I don't want
to disappoint 300 regaular users by letting it ever go down.

So, if I'm going to put in the effort and stress to do everything in
my power to keep the BBS alive indefinitely, then *please* do me the
favour of at least helping me sponsor.

I'm sure that all the friends, the events, the socialising, the hours
you've spent online, and the entire Active BBS entity itself is worth
*many* times more to you than 43 dollars.

If Active was ever about to go down and be out of your lives forever,
gone.. never to exist.. no movienights, no Active friends, no chatting
online, no nothing. If it was all about to disappear, how much would
you pay to keep it there for you? I'm not even sure we can put a figure
on what it's worth to us *all*.

So, this is it.. I'm asking. *Help* me run Active...

Do your bit to help me <and everyone else> out and send in your $43!

Because, currently, we *do* need it.

Cheers!

...NickZ <hugs>

Subj: ** Quickscan Stats **

As you all know, a month ago I asked everyone to tell me the sigs they
had configured in their quickscan so I could do stats on it. Well, I
now responses from the following 50 users:

Mills, Serenity, Alt, Akuma, Footos, Kezza, Nickz, Twilite,
Bootleg, Vead, Chooky, Couch, Mabster, Mrindia, Leon, Pringle,
Goktimus, Scarlet, Chucky, Crusader, Zuid, Snoggle, Kojak, Pyscho,
Angel, Bliss, Candy, Lisa, Cupid, Uncanny, Lestat, Myst,
Zenith, Hoju, Abyss, Oracle, Bandito, Navigator, Sephiroth, Lilith,
Sleepy, Rhonda, Boyd, Sophie, Valiant, Odo, Elite, Rex,
Lazy, Siiko.

...and now for the stats! :)

50 Active Users were surveyed as to which sigs they have configured
in their quickscan. 6 of which have every sig configured, and 7 of
which don't use a quickscan at all. Of the 43 users that use a
quickscan, the follow list shows the sigs and how many users have
them configured:

Pos Sig Name Num
---------------------
1. /Quotes 41
2. /Party 40
3. /Active 39
4. /Comedy 38
5. /Suggest 35
6. /Sex 34
7. /Naan 33
8. /Music 29
9. /Poetry 26
10. /Thir!? 25
11. /Psyche 25
12. /Cars 24
13. /Trading 23
14. /Internet 21
15. /Program 20
16. /Games 19
17. /Poota 18
18. /Scifi 13
19. /Girls 11

Surprisingly, more people have /Quotes configured than any other
sig :)

Special thank to everyone who have me their quickscan info! :)

Subj: ** Moving Date **

**********************************************************************

Ok, today I spoke to Telstra yet again! I'm still battling for some
sort of discount, however I told them that regardless of the discount, I
need a date set *now* if possible to work by, or to cancel if we don't
have the funds. They agreed to that.

SOOOOOOOO The official installation date for Active's 14 lines at
Voodoo's new place will be the 16th of July, which is next thursday!!
<yes that's right, one week from today!!>

Unfortunately, next week is the best time because Voodoo will be off
work all week, hence making it a hell of a lot easier for him to be
around on the day, instead of having to take a day off work.

Unfortunately, between now and next thursday, we only have one event
in which to hand me money, and that is Movienight!!!!!!!!!!

*PLEASE* try to make the effort to hand me your pledge money on
Movienight, or to mail it in prior to then!! A lot of people have
recently told me that they won't have the money for a few weeks or even
a month in some cases. As understandable as this is, it's also a tad
worrying! So far I've only received 15% of the pledged money, and I
will need a hell of a lot more than that before next week!

If the lines are installed and the pledge money doesn't come in, then
as you can imagine, Active is going to be in deep shit!

So please, if you have pledged, then make the effort to pop by
Movienight to hand me the money, or to mail in a cheque or money order
to the following address:

"Active Entertainment BBS"
PO Box 33
HABERFIELD NSW 2045

...and make cheques payable to "Active Entertainment BBS".

Thanks for your time :)

Cheers!

Subj: ACTIVE!

I'd just like to thank Nickz for all the effort he is putting into
saving Active.
Lots of people have pledged their money which is great and here's hoping
that he collects most of it tomorrow night.
I think we should all just stop and think about what will happen if he
doesn't collect enough.

Thats enough time. (:
So .. if it were me I think I would be wondering if its worth the
effort.
Why fight to save a BBS that has people who pledge money and don't come
up with the cash ??? And may for all he knows never will ???

I did not [and am not] that financial atm, and I said to Nickz that I
might not be able to pay him for a few weeks, but Nickz knows I am good
for the money, but today I was thinking, well , thats unfair in away on
Nickz cause he obviously needs the cash NOW!!!
So I didn't buy anything while I was out, I resisted lots of temptations
and went to the bank and withdrew the money so Nickz can have it
tomorrow night.
I just hope more ppl feel the same way as I did today. Just go without
your drugs, or your booze, or shopping sprees, or whatever your
addiction is [mmmmmmmmmm.. beer / mmmmmmmmmmm.. chocolate / whips &
chains [cough] / edible undies / etc ] and give Nickzee boy your cash.

If you can't be there tonight, and you are going to send the money in,
why not give the guy a break and let him know he is definately getting
your money.
I'm not sure how worried he is, But I'd be pretty damn worried.
Active is being saved through his faith in the Users.
Don't let him down.!!!

Oh .. Nickz .. by the way .. can we have a shame file if the people
don't give their pledges ??? BWWAHhahhahaha ...

A word of advice to those reading this text file and learning ANSI.

If you're going to use ANSI in messages, cool, but learn how to use it
first, and make the effort to view/check it and fix it if it has errors.

Nobody likes a lazy ANSI person :)

Also, some ansi codes like "screen clearing" and the like can be very
annoying, so I'd suggest not using them unless you A) enjoy being abused
by the users for it :) or B) want to run the risk of the Sigop removing
your ANSI access to their sig :)

Also, if you use ANSI, try to end it with <esc>[0m to reset it. That
way when people quote your message, their reply will be in the normal
grey colour.

Very observant! That "Arcadia BBS" was the BBS that JimmyZ, YvonneZ,
and myself ran before Active :) and it's number was <wait for it>
584-1467.. Yep, Active's *old* phone number! :)

JimmyZ and Yvonne ran a single line BBS on Jim's faithful microbee
computer, on software written in Microbee basic :) Then later <around
1989/90??> I joined the ranks. This BBS was Arcadia.

Eventually, Jim had the idea of starting Active, so he had a few extra
lines installed, got an IBM and MBBS, and we started it. Arcadia was
forced to move to a new place where Yvonne and Gripz continued to run
it.

There you go, ay? :)

Subj: To Not So New Users...

Are you sick and tired of all those full screen menus on Active!? Are
you sick of that Monster on the Active Main Menu?? Are you sick of
having a FULL MENU come up every time you receive a page!???

Well, if you are, then it's because YOU DON'T HAVE BRIEF MENUS
ENABLED!!!!! :)

Yes, that's right! I suspect that a lot of users still have not
enabled BRIEF MENUS on Active, and if you already know the commands and
know how to Warp, then those FULL MENU Screens you get are *REALLY*
annoying!!!!!!!!!!

So, how do you get rid of them? How do you enable Brief Menus on
Active??? It's very very simple!!!!!

All you do is go to the "User Configuration Menu" and select option
"B" to toggle Brief Menus ON and OFF.

..or even easier, type "/w u" and then press 'B' to toggle the option!

Even if Brief Menus are ON, you can still type "?" at a menu prompt to
display the FULL MENU in case you're not sure of the options.

But trust me, Brief Menus are much nicer! Instead of a full menu on
your screen, you just get a single line menu prompt!! Do it!! Do it
now!! :) :)

Cheers!

Subj: Suggestions for writing ...

After having waded through a rather sizable quickscan I'd just like to
ask people to try and do the following things:

* quoting. Be reasonable - there's no need to quote a whole message to
reply with one line, but it's equally as frustrating to have a reply to
a message with no quoting whatsoever. There's no reason not to, because
the /show and /quote commands are available to everyone.

* ANSI. If you don't know how to use it - don't use it. If you want to
practice, then you can do it in private mail. As a SigOp, I'm quite
quick to remove ANSI access from people who use it sloppily. As Kojak
said - think of it as an optional extra, not a feature to be used at all
times. Do you use your air conditioning in your car all the time?

* Structure. Perfect spelling isn't necessary, nor is strictly
following the rules of English - but basically ask yourself "are my
shortcuts going to reduce the readability of my message?" ... Writing a
screenful of text with no paragraphs, shocking spelling and bugger all
punctuation is not only frustrating, but it'll stop people bothering
with the message. Before someone jumps in with "i dont care wot u say i
will right how i want" - then remember the idea of Messages is to
communicate with other people. If they can't read it, then why bother
writing in the first place?

* Content. This is the bit that's pretty much entirely up to the
individual. Writing stuff you KNOW is just full of shit is probably not
the best idea. :)

* Last thing - check your message. Just give it a re-read. It
shouldn't worry you enough to not bother. If other people are going to
read it, then why shouldn't you? Doesn't take more than a minute to
type OK and press V or L in the edit menu, then proof-read it.
Particularly if it's a long message.

Nobody's asking for a thesis, but just a little consideration doesn't go
astray. :)

Thanks people ... keep writing! :)

If your screen ever stuffs up due to bad ANSI, and all the characters
appear as gibberish and you can't fix it, well, now there's a fix :)

Just warp to Chatline and type "fix"

"fix" is an action I created which sends ANSI <esc>[10m to fix up your
terminal again!

So remember it! :) Just "/w c" and then "fix", and you're right
again! :)

And now for a few predictions for the future.

Scarlet, who is the moderator of this message base, will soon write to
you in private. Her private mail will basically be some text copied from
the famous book 'How to run a BBS' By Jimmyz.

You will notice plenty of smilie faces, action words and all sorts of
confusing dialogue in her message and you won't know wether to take it
seriously so you'll continue to do be 'annoying'.

About a day later, Nickz will copy you some text from 'How to run a BBS
volume II' by Jimmyz. Again, his message will seem all nice and happy
and kinda fluffy so again, you won't know wether he's serious or not.

So, you continue to do what you're doing.

24hrs later you find yourself suspended and classified as an outcast.

You're not a dork, you don't belong here.

Years.................. Years..................

Note however that the creation date of users in the second graph only
reflects how often we were verifying at the time. As a lot of you know,
there was a period where we were hardly verifying at all and a LOT of
new potential users basically slipped through our fingers.

The interpretation of these graphs? Well, that's for each of you to
determine, but I'll give mine anyhow.

The first graph would indicate that unlike I predicted, we do seem to
have quite a few new users calling the system. Also, there isn't a
'gap' in the current Active generation of users as I thought there would
be. Instead, there seems to be a nice spread of users from every era of
Active, from 91 through to 98. As for the drop in 1996 in the first
graph, I can only attribute that to A) the indicated lack of
verification in the second graph for that year, and B) Active having
moved in that year.

The second year purely indicates how often we were verifying. Note
that many unused account prior to 1994 were deleted by David and Wheels,
so the columns for 91, 92, & 93 should be significantly higher. The
sudden drop in 96 would be due to Dazza leaving Active, Voodoo changing
jobs and not able to verify, and Wheels/David losing interest in Active
and not verifying :) Possibly also attributed to the move, but only
slightly as there were always more signups than the time we had to
verify them.

Anyway, there's the graphs and my interpretation of them. Make of it
what you will.

Heideli hey.

For those of you who were around last year, and the year before,
you may remember something called the "Annual Active Awards". This
is where you vote certain Activites for different categories. One
thing to remember, is that it is all in the name of fun, do not take
anything as an insult.

If you could take some time out of your ever so hectic schedules,
and fill in a general list, it would be greatly appreciated.

Just a few rules...
1. You can _NOT_ vote for yourself.
2. False votes shall not be included.
3. All replies MUST be done privately. Public replies might not be
included.
4. You MUST make three votes per category.
5. Have fun!

Uhm, just a few more additions. Golden D00d refers to males AND
females. Also, for things like "Cutest person", you DON'T have to
vote for both male and female.

The categories are in the attatched file. Do an ascii download,
answer in a text editor of some description, and upload to me
privately. And now, MAY THE VOTING, COMMENCE!!!

Ok, well I'll attach a copy of the latest BBS listing, which was
released In September 1998, and unfortunately doesn't have Active's new
number in it yet.

This listing has 101 BBSes, however the guy told me that they used to
call all the numbers and check them every 2 months, and due to neglect,
they haven't checked them for 9 months, so a LOT of them are no longer
valid. So, I guess his estimate of 50 is probably kinda close <shrug>.

Either way, the list isn't dying They're rewriting new software to
generate it all and stuff, so they're just delayed. I think one of the
largest problems is that new BBS owners don't know who to contact to get
themselves added to the list.

Anyway, here's the latest list for NSW.

Subj: History of Movienights

HISTORY OF MOVIENIGHTS!!!!
==========================

I was thinking today that it would be nice if someone wrote up a
brief history of the movienights. I decided to contact a guy called
Sean Rodden (Ratsta) who I haven't spoken to in over 5 years, because
he was involved from the beginning. This is basically the story:

Sometime late in 1988, a guy called Virgil St. John (a user on a BBS
called "Paragon") decided to organise a gathering for some of the users
of Paragon BBS. This was highly irregular since in those
days people did not use Bulletin Boards for social reasons. In fact,
most of the people using them were recluses and not particularly
interested in meeting anyone. However, by 1988 there was a slightly
younger and more adventurous crowd signing-up. He organised the first
event and the meeting spot was the Town Hall Steps. It was called a
"BBS Bash". As you would expect from recluses, a total of 6 people
turned up. Over the course of several years, there were 14 BBS Bashes
organised with increasing crowd numbers. However, whilst these were
being organised, a group of users from the same BBS (Paragon) decided
to organise what they called a "Movienight". Sean Rodden was involved
in this and so was Jim Hirst (JimmyZ).

The first movienight would have occurred approximately mid 1989 and
they all met on Town Hall Steps :). Movienights were ogranised
occasionally from that time on, but it wasn't until Active BBS was
founded in April 1991, by JimmyZ and NickZ, that they became a regular
monthly event. Within the first few months of Active starting, it was
decided that Movienights should always be held on the second Saturday
of every month. To this day, not a single movienight has ever been
cancelled. This means that since Active originally began in
April 1991, there have been almost 95 Active movienights held :)

Subj: What is a Movienight?

WHAT IS A MOVIENIGHT??!!
========================

Some of us already know what a Movienight is, some of us have been
going for ages and still don't understand the concept, and some are
new users who have never been to one and would probably like some
idea before they join us :)

Firstly, let me explain that very few people actually go to watch
a movie on a "Movienight" :) Although this was the original purpose
of this event, it is no longer the primary purpose - this does not
mean you can't watch a movie! :)

Basically, it is an informal and easy way to meet some of the
people you have gotten to know online. It's less threatening than
one on one meetings and a lot easier to organise. Also, it is easy
to walk away from a movienight when you realise the person you are
meeting doesn't look anything like the picture of a model they
uploaded to you :) But seriously, it is a very easy way to say
"Hi" to a few people and get to know them personally. What you do
next is up to you...

You will notice that people have various plans for Movienights.
If you have decided to stick around, you are more than welcome to
join any of the groups. Nobody on Active, to my knowledge, has
ever been rude enough to exclude anyone from their plans. However,
it is recommended that you are a little thoughtful when asking
to join a group. For example, there is no point joining a group who
is heading for a $60 a head dinner if you only have $5 in your pocket.
Also, consider that you may be wearing a torn Metallica T-shirt and
no shoes and this may not go down particularly well in a nice
restaurant, and only serve to embarass the other people who are
with you. However, this doesn't mean you can't join the group at
a later time.

For example, you could join another group and go off and have
McDonalds for dinner and organise to meet a different group who you
know are planning to go to a nightclub you really like. Or perhaps
you could just stick around Town Halls Steps for an hour chatting
before going home. The idea is to chat to various people, find
out what they have planned, and politely ask them if they would
mind you joining them in their Activities. I cannot think of a
single user rude enough to tell you you can't join them (unless of
course they are going to a private party, or have firm numbers
booked somewhere, or something).

So, rather than saying "I don't know anyone" or asking what
people do on movienights, come along and try it out! The worst
that can happen is you wasted a buck or two on the bus fare :)

Movienights are held every second Saturday of the month, on
the Sydney Town Hall Steps. People gather from 6:30pm onwards
and start to head off about 7:30pm.

Seeya there (I hope),

MikeZ.

* New "/EVENT" command!! Typing "/Event" anywhere on the system will
show you a list of the events that are coming up. The same list that
can be viewed in those new Active Help menus. Also, to view an option
on that Event menu, you just add the option number after it. For
example:

"/Event" - Lists coming events
"/Event 1" - Shows details of event 1.
"/Event 2" - Shows details of event 2.
"/Event C" - Shows the Events Calendar.
etc...

* I timed Active's clock over 12 days and found that it loses exactly
25.5 seconds per day, so I have added a routine so that during cleanup,
25.5 seconds are added to Active's clock :) This means from now on,
Active's time should always be accurate. Over the course of the next
few weeks, I'll check it and adjust that 25.5 figure until the clock is
perfect.

Cheers,

Subj: Birthdays

In case people didn't know, or forgot :), there's an option in the
Help Menus that lists everyone's birthdays, by month.

To get to the help menus, type "/w i h".

However, it currently only has 28 users' birthdays in it.

SOOOOOOOOOOO!!! if you want your birthday added to the list, then
LEAVE EMAIL TO MABSTER WITH YOUR BIRTHDATE so he can add it!!

Cheers :)

P.S. or press "E" and reply to me, and I'll forward the message on.

Oh yeah...

You can type "/Weather" now to see the weather report :)

..and also "/Birthday" to see Active' birthdays :) Well actually,
"/Birthday" displays the main list, and then you enter a letter after it
for the month.. ie "/birthday a" to see Jan, "/birthday b" to see feb,
etc.

...Yeah :)

Subj: Birthday Menu.

Ok, I've _finally_ gotten around to updating the Birthday section
of the help menus. If I left you out, or you haven't given me your
birthday details yet and want them up there, then leave me PRIVATE
e-mail, with day, month, and if you want the age put up, then the year.

Don't give me other peoples birthdays. The only times I've put up
birthdays given to me by other people is when I first started this
thing to see how it would look, and also when other people have
updated the birthday section. This rule is in place in case somebody
does not want the date of their birthday made public.

So remember, leave me private e-mail. To have a look at birthdays,
simply type "/birthday" for the list of months and corrosponding
letters. For Birthdays in May, simply type "/birthday e".

Subj: ** Movienight ** !!

***** MOVIENIGHT is *TONIGHT* *****

Why am I stating this? Because often people say to me afterwards "Oh,
was Movienight last night??? I was going to go"

So, now you know.. it's tonight :) Town Hall steps, in the city,
meeting at 6:30 to 7:00pm.

Dinner, Pool, Drinking, Retro, Movie, Pizza-hut food wars, whatever
you want to do with it :)

Really, how hard is it to meet up at Town Hall Steps at 6:30pm? :)

In case you're interested, I've been keeping a tally of various
events, so I'll paste the past 9 movienights, plus a comment that helps
identify them <or at least to me> :)

Date.... Event............. Ppl Comment........................
08/08/98 Movienight 36 Just after big rains!
12/09/98 Movienight 36 Raining. 16 at chinese dinner.
10/10/98 Movienight 30 Rained a tad. 10 at chinese.
14/11/98 Movienight 28 Tanya/Sektor were hiding.
12/12/98 Movienight 44+ Sunny day, 14 chinese then Retro
09/01/99 Movienight 25 Armand had a Party on
13/02/99 Movienight 10 Mills' had her 18th Party on
13/03/99 Movienight 34 Callisto went :)
10/04/99 Movienight 32 Greek Easter :)

There's no parties on tonight, but a little bit of rain on and off and
it's a tad cold. So, I predict about 28 to 34 people. We'll see how
accurate I was :)

Hello.

Does anyone know where I can buy Chupa Chups in bulk? One of my friends
gave me a whole plastic tin full once (like you see in the shops) and
something similar would be cool, but I'd love to buy only the flavours
I like (the fruits, not the creams) in wholesale.

Any ideas where? As close to Castle Hill as possible would be great...

Well folks, if you have ever been bored enough to read Kojak's rego, you
would realise that he has put his wedding date in it (ok stop
laughing!). Anyhow, that date was a few days ago which means, that if
nature is cruel, he has actually married by now.

I will not assume he has had sex yet, as I'm sure he's still talking
about it. However, who thinks he actually did it? What are the chances
the girl realised this mumbling embecile from down-under is the biggest

Stay tuned, but I'm ready to start taking bets that he'll be back in

Subj: Exempt Messages :)

You should all read EXEMPT MESSAGES so you can remember how to write
good mail again :) :)

If you're into very very odd/strange messages, then check out the
combined message that Mills and I wrote in here once about the new
./Alarm function :)

Well, it made me laugh and reminded me of good time :) But maybe you
had to be there. "/view 1065647 /Active".

If you want to view a message on how Movienights originally started,
prior to Active BBS, then read a brief history of them from one of
MikeZ's messages, "/view 1139607 /Active".

If you want to read a strange message from me in /Naan about 101 uses
for Milk cartons <god I must have been SOOOO bored that night :)>, then
type "/view 1048105 /Quotes".

Anyway, there's too many exempt messages to read in one night, but
there's some good ones :)

I'd like to see more messages with exempting. More messages that
portray what Active was and is.

Anyway... hi :)

All Hyperactive Users should read this message!! All none Hyperactive
users should read this and wish they had Hyperactive access :) :)

The Help Menus! New Changes, for Hyperactive callers :) What is
it?????? Welllllllllllllll....

Hyperactive users can NOW create their OWN MENUS ON ACTIVE <A little
like web page space I guess> :)

How do you view private user's Menus??? Simple, just type "/w i hu"
and you're there.

How do you *create* your own Menu???????? Simple... if you're
Hyperactive access, then go to "/w i hu" and read the Help there on how
it works <option 1>... Then page either Mabster, Kezza, or myself to
set up your Menu space and away you go!! You can have up to 100
menu/options of WHATEVER YOU LIKE!!!!!! Amaze, for example, made his a
Raves Guide thingie :)

So, if you're Hyper, you have access to create your own menus on
Active <in the Help Menus>.. Cool, ay? :) Well, I thought so :)

If there's any bugs, report them to me. If you don't understand them,
report to me. if you're not good enough with ANSI, then read up on
ANSI commands in the Help Menus :)

Have lots and lots of fun :)

As something to do, I've been putting up some photos of my

What I am asking for is, if you consider yourself a mate of mine or a

yourself (any format is fine) or give me permission to use one of yours
from one of the exisiting active pages (if that is alright with Orchy

Anyway, its up to you. I still get about 600 hits a day (from my old

Subj: ANSI MUSIC on MACS!!!

As you all know, ANSI MUSIC crashes Mac computers. Well, thanks to
Odo's help, we decided to try and find a way around it once and for all,
AND WE FOUND ONE!!!!!!

The "Ranger" action shouldn't crash Mac computers anymore. It's a
dodgy work around, but it works :)

** <technical explanation> **
Basically, if you want to avoid ANSI music crashing a mac, all you do
is preceed the ANSI music with "<esc>[ " <--- note the space!! That
is, escape-bracket-space. How does it work? Well IBMs interpret the
space as an ansi code that does nothing and then it interprets the ANSI
MUSIC after it in the normal manner, where as Macs ignore spaces when
reading ANSI which means that it takes the start of the second ANSI as
being the end of the last one, hence missing the start of the ANSI
MUSIC, and hence not interpretting the ANSI MUSIC as ANSI, and hence not
fucking up their machines :)

Anyway, basically, putting <esc>-bracket-space immediately before ANSI
MUSIC codes will stop the ansi music from crashing Mac computers!!!

Yes, no need to tell me I'm brilliant :) :)

> What do you think of the proposed Preamble?

I think it is a loathsome spotted behind.

If you haven't seen it yet, here it is in all it's glory:

"With hope in God, the Commonwealth of Australia is constituted as a
democracy with a federal system of government to serve the common good.

We the Australian people commit ourselves to this constitution:

proud that our national unity has been forged by Australians from many
ancestries;

never forgetting the sacrifices of all who defended our country and
liberty in time of war;

upholding freedom, tolerance, individual dignity and the rule of law;

honouring Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, the nation's first
people, for their deep kinship with their lands and for their ancient
and continuing cultures which enrich the life of our country;

recognising the nation-building contribution of generations of
immigrants;

mindful of our responsibility to protect our unique natural
environment;

supportive of achievement as well as equality of opportunity for all;

and valuing independence as dearly as the national spirit which binds
us together in both adversity and success."

It doesn't quite have the same ring as "We, the people..." now does it.

(In fact, it rather reminds me of a corporate mission statement!)

Ok, here's a copy of Telemate, Version 4.12.

Mike cut it down a while ago and set it up ready to use with Active,
with Active's number as a dial entry and all.

I know Wilbur uploaded it once, but his version was huge and split
over several files. This has it all in one and is only about 550k in
size.

Basically, download it, extract it, and then type "tm" to run it and
you can then log onto Active with it. Simple.

To extract it, go to the directory where it was downloaded and type
"pkunzip tm.zip", and then type "tm.exe" to run telemate.

times where we have debates and a simple Yes/No voting system is
required. Well, here is how it works.

When a user writes a message, they have the option to save their
message as a VOTE message <A POLL>. What does that mean!? It means
that when users come to your message, the header of your message shows
the number of YES and NO votes made and the percentages. To make a
vote, all you do is press "V" and then select "Y" or "N" for a YES or NO
vote!! It's VERY VERY SIMPLE!!!! You do this at the message prompt.
ie. just like it's 'R' to reply, it's now 'V' to vote <if it is a
VOTING message>.

I have also coded it so that multiple votes aren't allowed by a single
user. Basically, the only way to do this is to prevent a user from
voting on a message which is older than the last message they voted on
in that sig. Basically, Active keeps track of the highest message
number you voted on in each sig. You can't vote from pmail, only from
messages.

Currently, only the Sigops can create voting messages while it is
being tested, but we can all vote on these messages.

To test it, the next message in here will be a VOTING message from me
so you can all see what it looks like. Remember, when you read it, you
just press "V" to vote, or if you like you can ignore it and continue
with your mail :)

Use and Enjoy :)

Subj: Active's Average Age!

I just went through the top 50 users (hourly) which are our most
regular callers for last month, and I wrote down everyone's age next to
their name in the list, based on the /# and my knowledge of them (I
never realised how many people I knew before :)).

I think added up the ages and took the average. For each age, I added
half a year to account for the fact that on average, each person will be
somewhere between their current age and their next age.

Anyway, I did all this, and the average age of regular callers on
Active, for November, is.............

22.5 years old.

Interesting, hey? It used to be from 14 to 16 :)

Subj: ** ZAP HAPPY ** (READ THIS MESSAGE!!)

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Ok, please listen up! I have done something very very
foolish, which could bring a lot of us much much grief, but
one of us much much joy :)

I have decided that one of the lucky regular callers, out of the
Top100 Hours list for November, have been unknowingly given (are you
read for it?) zap access :)

I just wrote a C routine to generate a random number from 1 to 100,
ran it once only, and looked up who that person was in the last Top100
and gave them the zap flag :) It could be any one of you, and I'm
not telling who it is :)

After you discover it, I'll be removing it. I guess the art to this
is that when you discover it, to be as descrete as possible so that I
don't realise you know and remove it from you :) Alternatively, you
can just go zap trigger happy until someone calls my mobile and says
"PLEAAAAAASE STOP SUCH&SUCH!!!!!!!" <rofl> :)

Well, one of you, right now, out of the Top 100, has access to zap
another user :) It could be you! :)

Subj: /Active

Scarlet's been quite busy these days, so I've been called in to baby-sit
/Active for a little while, until she returns!

Remember folks, /Active is for "all the crap left over", that translates
into all the stuff that isn't relevant in the other sigs.

It *doesn't* mean crappy messages are welcome tho! :)

Debating is great <and greatly increases quantity of messages>, but
please avoid personal attacks, and try and maintain quality in the
messages you write!

Good messages will be awarded as per usual. The author's of personal
attack type messages will be subject to a never-ending torturous
experience of some sort! :)

** Welcome to the 4th Annual Active Awards!!! ***

Firstly, some changes have been made to the system this year. Changes
that everyone should find as being for the better.

Many of the questions have been re-vamped, to keep up with Active as it
is now, and to do away with some of the dodgier questions. :)

Also, the voting system has changed slightly, basically you can
send your completed poll to either Pyscho, or to myself. As usual -ALL-
answers will be kept confidential by us, and also Pyscho or I won't be
revealing your poll results to the other. So if you send your results
to Pyscho, then I don't get to see your results at all, and if you send
them to me, then she won't get to see your results at all.

Naturally, we'll be comparing the list of who voted to make sure that
nobody votes twice, but not the results. If you do send your results to
both of us (please don't do this), then we will compare the two
submissions. If there are any discrepancies then your whole voting
entry will be declared null and void.

Please remember, that if the question doesn't specify Male or Female
then you can vote for either sexes in the poll. This means that
categories such as Golden D00d or Golden Lamer can be a male or female!

Further, people aren't allowed to vote for themselves. Please complete
all fields (3 votes per category), and please cast all votes seriously.

Remember, send your poll results in -private- mail to Pyscho or Odo.

Subj: Year 2000 Active Awards - Report!

Firstly, a big THANK YOU to all those who voted. Congratulations to all
those who received a placing! Regardless of which category you got a
placing in, you can take pride in the fact that you have been -NOTICED-
by a large number of people! :)

As per usual, the actual number of votes for each person has not been
listed, this is to prevent some people from going into shock, and others
from developing an even larger ego.

The System of having two Ballot Officers has been a success, with both
Pyscho and myself receiving impressive numbers of votes.

While you read through the results in the next message, please spend a
moment or two thinking about contructive comments and suggestions, if
anything comes to mind, please let us know, so that we can make next
years results even bigger and better!!!!

For those who received a placing in the less desirable categories,
please remember that the Awards are run for Entertainment purposes, and
not to cause hurt or grief. Don't take such results to heart!

Thanks again to those who voted!

Here's a MAP of the location where Activator 7 is!!!

It just shows Cryodon and surrounding suburbs, however you'll have to
look at a street directory to work out where Croydon is :)

Basically, Lilith's house <and home of the Activator> is next to the
train line, pretty much exactly between Croydon and Burwood stations!!
The best way to get there is by train. From the city, Croydon is the
stop just before Burwood. Her house is 15 mins walk from either
station, however we may make frequent trips to the station to pick
people up. All you have to do is buz the Mab Line :)

Anyway, here's a map showing the location and details, in JPG format.

Subj: New Games On Active!!

New Crappy Game on Active !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

ANDROIDS is back!!!!! Possibly the worst ANSI game in existence! :)
But, a lot of fun when everyone's playing at once :)

It has the old top10 score table in it too with the old user names and
dates from 1993 <when I last had the game online> :) it's the default
Game that comes with the old MBBS :)

Anyway, it's a maze that you move arounf collecting points, with the
cursor keys! If you run into walls you lose points. If you run into
other players, you gain them, and they lose them :)

Also, FLASH games are back in, if you still have them lying around.

Anyway, ANDROIDS is "A" off the main menu, or you can "/w a" to it. I
haven't updated the ANSI on the main menu for it yet.

> IN a land called (something - can anybody help?)

PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal PUFF
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.

<CHORUS>
Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail,
Jackie kept a lookout perch on PUFF's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,
Pirate ships would low'r their flags when PUFF roared out his
name.

CHORUS

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant strings make way for other toys.
One great night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And PUFF that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow - green scales fell like rain,
PUFF no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend PUFF could not be brave
So PUFF that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave.

CHORUS

Subj: The Actions!

The dates were obviously the actions' creation dates. I removed
any test actions of mine. Further, remember that some of the highly
used public actions were made public, like "lamer", hence I removed it.

Also, the top private action was WAY in front because 2 idiots, after
the posting of the top10 actions last time, ran a script to make their
action count the highest, hence, I removed it, and the name of the action
or people don't deserve a mention! :)

So don't bother running a script on your private actions or else I just
won't show them next time :)

Cheers,

Reply to #1234009

I've read the replies from people to this message and it seems the
general consensus is that the BBS should stay. I'd have to agree with
that.

Active's been responsible for some of the best times of my life, and
has introduced me to people I consider to be my closest friends. It's
been a part of my life for 8 years, and I for one, dont want to see it
just shut down because it didnt keep up with the disposable society we
live in these days. Active's like an institution, in fact for some of
the callers, it probably is.

The userbase is huge, it has the widest range of people of anywhere,
we've got fags, uni students, young kids, old kids, animal fuckers,
mental patients, westies, goths and just about any other social
grouping you care to mention. To quote the Late Show, its like holding
a mirror up to multicultural society. :). It shouldnt be allowed to
just fade off into history.

This is a BBS for the users, by the users.. Sure, the sysops actually
run it, but its essentially us who decide what happnes with it. The
message asking if we want it to stay or go is proof of that. One thing
that may bring the message home even more is getting some new
(co)sysops.

At the moment there are 5 sysops, Nickz, Mikez, Voodoo, David and
Wheels. Nick and Mike we see regularly, Voodoo has the BBS at his house,
but David and Wheels rarely log on. When they do, they go on about how
they dont remember commands, or how much better the net is. This doesnt
paint a good picture for new users when not even the sysops can be
bothered calling. I know handing out sysop access is not an easy thing
considering what the access entails, but perhaps some fresh additions to
the group would help things along slightly.

It seems to me the reason people logon is to chat and do mail. With
internet access becoming cheaper and being available to almost anyone,
people have gotten used to just staying on the net, chatting in the
stilted, lagged manner icq and irc offers. But when it comes down to
it, no-one really enjoys it. Active at least offers actions in chat and
no lag. It also has a much nicer medium to chat on. Not to mention the
fact that you dont pages asking you for your a/s/l and people dont feel
the need to ping flood you if you irritate them.

I've been using the net for nearly 12 years now, and I can confidently
say I am definately over the whole experience. Most long term users
of the net would say the same thing. It has a few good points, but
as a whole, its been turned into a large scale waste of time. About
the only use I have for the net now is finding mp3's, and even that
doesnt hold much appeal anymore.

I dont think Active should join to the net, in fact, I'm even against
telnetting to it with interactive, but if enough of the old regular
callers are now exclusively on the net, perhaps its time to adapt
to what people want. Interactive is a great idea, but its a little
restrictive at the moment. It needs to be able to use more features
of the BBS. Messages should be local only, but things like the help
menu's, chat, or registry editting could be done across the net. The
main point is keeping some reason for people to actually dial in and
not just telnet in. Possibly coding Active to work with Icq or Napster
in a limited fashion would be good. SMS paging from Active is another
great tool.

I'm not saying to change things to the extent that you can do everything
you can do on the net, from Active instead, but opening up new
possibilities might be good. It also means the BBS can grow without
actually losing the individuality that makes it the place we call and
love.

This BBS has survived moving three times, a formatting of the hard
drive, people who seem intent on making life hell for all the callers
and dodgy programming from the head sysop. The main fact is that it
survived, so I dont see any reason why the big bad internet should kill
it either. There are 100 ways the BBS can change and remain alive, we
just need to find them.

So, instead of seeing if people want it to stay, because obviously they
do, lets work out ways it can change so that it keeps up and remains a
popular and useful place to call.

With the number of people who call, have called and will call, its not
a big task at all. We just need to get on with doing something about it.

Subj: Top20 Psychoanalytical Evaluation :)

Through intensive research of many current and past statistics, I have
put together a psychoanalytical evaluation showing a strong link
between the number of messages written and their behavioural traits.

The following table lists the ranges of messages written and the
character traits associated with these ranges for a 61 day period:

# Msgs. Top20 Psychoanalytical Evaluation for 61 Day Period
------------------------------------------------------------------------
250+ An excessive amount of mail! Must obviously be either a legend
or a Sysop :) Possibly both :)

200-249 Not quite legendary status, hence writes shitloads because
they either have a very low self-esteem, or issues :)

150-199 Someone who writes this much obviously only has a need to
either accuse people or write utter crap :)

100-149 Typical of a user who travels once and is still excited
enough to write to everyone about it :)

96 -99 An obvious intension to write just under 100 messages. Must
want to be legendary, without being pathetic :)

90 -95 Someone who writes this number of messages is obviously just a
very dedicated Sigop :)

70 -89 Likes replying with inane crap to 87/297th's of the Sysop's
messages :)

62 -69 Likes to read his own messages just over once a day! An
obvious sign of age :)

61 Likes to write exactly 1 message a day! Must be psychotic! :)

58 -60 A try hard writer, but just can't get it up to a message a day.
Questioned as to whether they can get it up at all! :) Could
just be the beer :)

56-57 Likes to add moral support from time to time!

54-56 Ok, this number of messages indicates a user who has just
started out as a healthy message writer, hence must have just
dated an Activite :)

40-54 This low number of messages indicates hesitation in writing.
Predicted to fold and give up his sig some time soon :)

38-40 Just a passing observer from time to time, but likes to put in
his hehe 2c worth while passing!

35-37 A low interest in message writing. Obiously only calls in the
hope of finding a decent female to marry :)

27-34 Someone who changes minds and decides to write every second
day. Must obviously be a cranky lesbian! :) :) :)

26 Must have the exact same views since they write the exact same
number of messages. Suspected to be either brothers or
involved in a homosexual experience :)

24-25 Obviously a keen user who can only call on the weekends!

< 24 Users who have recently installed ICQ :)

Subj: Daylight Saving

With the unusual switch to daylight savings time in August this year, I
thought it might be opportune to revisit this story...

Living on Zionist Time

1999 Darwin Awards Winner

Confirmed True by Darwin

(5 September 1999, Jerusalem) In most parts of the world, the switch
away from Daylight Savings Time proceeds smoothly. But the time change
raised havoc with Palestinian terrorists this year.

Israel insisted on making a premature switch from Daylight Savings
Time to Standard Time to accommodate a week of pre-sunrise prayers.
Palestinians unequivocally refused to "live on Zionist Time." Two
weeks of scheduling havoc ensued. Nobody knew the "correct" time.

At precisely 5:30 Israel time on Sunday, two coordinated car bombs
exploded in different cities, killing three terrorists who were
transporting the bombs. It was initially believed that the devices had
been detonated prematurely by klutzy amateurs. A closer look revealed
the truth behind the untimely explosions.

The bombs had been prepared in a Palestine-controlled area, and set on
Daylight Savings time. The confused drivers had already switched to
standard time. When they picked up the bombs, they neglected to
enquire whose watch was used to set the timing mechanism. As a result,
the cars were still en-route when the explosives detonated, delivering
to the terrorists their well-deserved demise.

(So if you are a terrorist planning to bomb the olympics, take care!)

Subj: Active Tag!

Active Tag
----------

OK, we all have mobiles these days. I've recently been thinking about
a scheme called "Active Tag". This is not an idea to annoy people, and
you have to agree to be in it otherwise you won't get harassed. Here's
how it works...

Anytime you are online, you are allowed to SMS someone with
"Active Tag!". The person receiving this SMS only has 2 options: They
must either log onto Active, and once they log on they have to send
"Active Tag!" to someone else on the tag list and not currently logged on.
If they don't log on, or they're not home or able to log on, they have
to send "Active Tag!" to *2* others on the list rather than just 1.

So, when you receive an Active Tag, you know that at least that person
is online, and you know that others on the list are bound to follow, so
maybe when you log on there will only be 1 other person, but that can
exponentially grow very quickly to, possibly, 14 full lines :)

It will take some committment and organisation, but if the idea gets
enough support then we'll compile the list of Active Tag people with
their respective phone numbers.

Mike.

FILE: ACTCURS.ZIP

Hi everyone!

I have just finished work on the first set of Active BBS cursors for
Windows. I will probably do some more in the future to update the
collection but these should provide you with a laugh from time to time
and ofcourse a memory of Active BBS at any time you are using the
computer :)

There is a readme.txt inside the zipfile so read that for installation
instructions, VERY EASY! (provided you have WinZip, available
EVERYWHERE!).

There's 9 cursors in all, leaving only the ones that are hardly in use,
out of the set.

Subj: Hour Lost Explaining Computer Terms to Mom

Austin, TX - Josh Granger lost an hour of his life yesterday as he tried
to explain the difference between memory and hard drive space to his
mother Cynthia Granger. The discussion started when Cynthia asked,
"Will I have enough memory if I install this family tree maker
software?"

"I should've just kept my mouth shut," a regretful Josh said, "but she
says that all the time. It was driving me nuts. I thought this time is
going to be different. This time she is going to understand." Alas,
poor Josh was wrong.

What follows is the beginning of that "Lost Hour" as it has become known
to Josh.

"Mom, it's not memory on a hard drive it's space, and loading a program
on your hard drive doesn't have anything to do with your memory," said
Josh.

"But I only have 64 Em-Bee of R-A-M," said Cynthia," and this program
says it requires 85 Em-Bee. It says it requires a modem too. Do we have
a modem?"

"Yes, we have a 56K modem. And no, 64 MB RAM and 85 MB space on your
hard drive is different Mom. Just because they both are measured in
megabytes doesn't mean they're the same thing. Is a gallon of milk the
same thing as a gallon of blood?"

"It doesn't say anything here about 56K, is that all right. What's a
mega-byte and why all this talk about blood. Have you been playing
those games again. How many times have I told you...."

Josh's brother Trevor witnessed the scene and said, "It was pretty sad,
really. When I heard him start to explain 56K, it was like watching
someone try to explain quantum physics to a goat. At that point,
though, he had no choice it was like the Titanic after the iceberg, just
a matter of time until the people started screaming."

The situation ended with Josh screaming "Shut up, shut up, shut up" and
then installing the "damn" family tree maker, while his mother cried in
the family room.

Subj: PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE! :)

As you have probably noticed active has been undergoing a few
changes as of late. Although, this has been a busy time of
year the response which we have been getting has been
promising.

Interactive, although it has been all over the place with the
times it has been running will now be running with far more
consistanly. Which means we can start to build a more regular
flow of users who are accessing the system, both on dial up as
well as through the net.

What does this mean? 2001 is going to be big. No - 2001 is
going to be fucking huge! :) MN's return, Oldies return. New
users will return and the idiots will return :) :) Events such
as clarkes point, C.R.A.S.H, Milk beach will be back,
we may even slip an activator in for Actives 10th birthday :)
Regardless, it is going to be huuuuuuuuuuuuge. I am going to
make sure of this. :)

However, to return active to this level I will need help from
you all. Creating an environment and returning the fun to
active is not something which the Sysops can do purely
themselves. Sure we will help it, and do our best to make it
possible. To do so we need your help.

How can you help? To start with, lets get active. Lets make
the effort. We are going to put some events on and we wanna
see you *all* turn out, I am sure you all recall some of the
most enjoyable nights you had were with activites. :) So lets
return this place to what it was. :) Lets get more people
involved, now we have access to the internet, we'll be able to
get a whole new generation of new users through the place
which will defaintely regenerate the place and make it both
more interesting to log on and make it more enjoyable. Lets
return the entire Yay fop woo!! attitude to this place.

Apart from turning up to events, get more involved in the bbs.
Write messages!! who cares if they are silly. There is no Jedd
here to have a go at your spelling :) and I will definately be
coming down hard on anyone who discourages people to write. By
the same token, I want you to give your opinions. There is
nothing like a good healthly debate. :) There is however, I
big distance between a debate and making it personal.
Something which would be good to avoid.

As most of you are aware, there has been a lot of division
through out active lately, Clearly this has been detrementral
to the bbs. Lets forget all that, lets make more of an effort
to put aside our differences and go out of our way to speak to
people who you wouldn't normally, to be just that little more
tolerent with people in general. There is nothing worse than
people bitching in channel, and I know I am guilty of it too.
It is somehting which I would like to see reduced. We all call
this place for enjoyment, so lets enjoy it. :)

In conclusion, Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets all work
together to make 2001 one of actives best years. :)

Kezza <The Cosysop whose stopped abusing :) >

G'day all,
It's been 7 years, yep, seven f'ing years since I last called Active.
Why, well I didn't have a modem for a start and I sort of presumed the
whole thing would have collapsed in on itself from the cumbersome weight
of illicent drug dealing and teenage suicide attempts. Suprised to find
it's still kicking.
What follows is a remeniscent wank of sorts. If you didn't call Active
around 91-94, you won't find any of this remotely interesting.
1. When Fred ran away from home and went missing and her Finnish folks
turned up to Tenpin Bowling at Enfield to track her down.
2. When Active and Vivid movie nights clashed.
3. Lazerzone during the Summer of 93' and a guy called Ccrider who
claimed to be the inventor of Doc Marten boots.
4. Activator 3? When Dhrystone and Maffz had their falling out.
5. Activator 5 - don't remember it.
Most of the other Active memories I have are a bit too sensitive to
broadcast. It's a spin out to be back I must say. What have I been
doing?
Finished Uni with a BA in Political Science, worked for Amnesty Int for
a year, then spent 2.5 years as a Personal Trainer - Injury Rehab
specialist. Not married, no kids. Presently chucked in my job and
contemplating next career move. Bumming around on Active will help put
that off for a bit I hope.

Don't know how many of you that i know that still log on... But.

To those of you that were friends with Zoltan, and that was most people
that knew him, I thought I may as well explain as best I could what
happened since most people seem to have heard and I don't want to keep
explaining it over and over.

On the 16/6/01 Zoltan and a few other people stupidly went to a cliff on
the north shore beachs.
It was around 3am, and extremely windy, but despite these circumstance
Zollie, I guess, felt the need to investigate his surroundings?!?! Never
satisfied with taking things at face value and always trying to find out
everything he could about everything, he decided that he would walk down
the path and to the bottom of the cliff.
Two of the people he was with stayed at the top, while two went down
with him.
As far as I know, everything was fine and he was walking back up the
cliff when whatever it was happened.
Zoltan was walking up last, less than a metre away from the person in
front of him, they were talking and the person in front turned forward
for a minute and then when he turned back Zoltan was gone.

After looking for him themselves the police were called and a search was
started.
The search continued for the following week until on the sunday morning
part of a body was found on Mona Vale beach, DNA tests were done and it
was confirmed that it was him.

After going to the funeral today, thank you to Bing who showed up, it's
so final, but still doesn't seem real.
I couldn't believe the amount of people that were there, it was so good
to see so many people cared about him.

It was a beautiful ceremony and .... I don't even know what to say, this
isn't really for everyone, but for those people that Zoltan was
important to, and there were lots who i can't even think of, but I just
thought that you deserved to know, as much as i could tell you, and he
has been buried at Pine Grove on the great western highway.

I think I will be going out there in a week or so, so to those of you
that wanted to come today but couldn't make it, get in contact with me
if you like and you can come pay your respects then...
