/PsychE!!

Ideally, /PsychE is an area for intelligent debate, discussion and
exchange about a diverse range of subjects including the human mind,
social issues, behaviour, and a billion other things that fall into the
catagory of the different "ologies".

Of course, in reality it's usually 600 messages about fucken
desalination plants. :)

Guns enpower those who wish to do damage to society. A gun is a vehicle,
an instrument designed specifically to inflict harm upon living
organisms.
Guns allow people with abstract concepts of creating carnage to
transform them into bloody, concrete, realities. (and the time it takes
to pull the trigger is notably shorter than the time it takes to asses
the consequences of pulling the trigger).
So a gun can be seen (indeed, this is my general viewpoint on weapons of
this nature) as a tool which can be used as a pretty monumental aiding
appartus for those who wish to commit a bit of spontaneus murder and
simply don't have the time (or intelligence) to consider the negative
ramifications of their impulsive actions..

On the whole, I can't see any reason why society shouldn't blame the
weapons. (just forgetting for the moment that guns are inanimate
objects). But the bigger question should be what kind of a society
manufactures these killing machines and puts them into the hands of
fallible people? (Yes, fallible. People who are unpredictable, easily
swayed by passion and emotion, people who could kill more than 10 people
at a time and during the course of action give no more thought to the
consequences than how they'd get the blood off their jeans that
evening.)

Subj: blub!

For those of you who hang shit on my drug habits, here is a pro-drug
article I thought I'd post [smirk]

THC's non-carcinogenity: For over two years in the early
'90's, 120 rats were given mega-doses of pure THC by
researchers for the National Toxicology Project, on behalf of
the National Institutes of Health. Enormous doses of THC were
delivered directly into the rats' stomachs ever single day for
the equivalent of a rat's lifetime. After all that, it turned
out that the THC-treated rats actually developed fewer tumours
than untreated rats, as reported in the March 1996 issue of
Fundamentals of Applied Toxicology.

As previous research has shown canabinoids to be vigorous
scavengers of free-radical ions in the body, this suggestion
of antineoplastic, tumour-inhibiting properties should come as
no surprise. However, the treated rats in the NTP study also
developed a propensity (after the equivalent of many years of
daily dosing with THC) tro go into convulsions when handled.
With whole canabis, where THC occurs along with the
antispasmodic canabinoid CBD (canabidiol), presumably this
would not be a longterm likelihood; but as no whole-canabis
work has been allowed, nothing can be determined.

THC's neuroprotection: Working quietly in Israel, free of US
regulatory constraints on canabis research, the Pharmos drug
company at Rehovoth this year began human testing with
dexanabinol, a THC "analog" which has shown neuroprotective
properties in animal tests. Far from injuring brain cells, THC
appears in fact to shield brain receptor sites from exitatory
amino acids like glutamate and aspartate, preventing
neurotoxicity caused by their build-up in brain tissues after
stroke and head injury. Pharmos is also developing dexanabinol
(which is virtually non-psychotropic) for use by glaucoma
sufferers. The company expects to have both canabinoid
preparations on the world market by 2000

" Cyberpunk is known for its telling use of detail, its carefully
constructed intricacy, its willingness to carry extrapolation into the
fabric of daily life. It favours "crammed" prose: rapid, dizzying bursts
of novel information, sensory overload that submerges the reader in the
literary equivalent of the hard-rock `wall of sound'. "

- Bruce Sterling

" Cyberpunk fiction [is] typically set in a sprawling metropolis of the
near, dark, and decadent future, and pits hard-edged, street level
outlaws against omniscient (and corrupt) corporations, and views
emerging hypertechnologies with equal portions of fascination and
distrust... and despite its air of superficial diffidence, cyberpunk is,
at heart, essentially *moral* art, deeply concerned with all the flaws,
compromises, and ethical choices that will always haunt humanity no
matter how exotic and futuristic the background against which human
dramas are played out. "

Subj: another book recommendation

if you're into thinking about ethics/human nastiness/evil/group
psychology etc etc etc
then Matt Ridley's book "The Origin of Virtue" should be right up your
chromosome:)
It looks at current research in sociobiology on the evolution of
altruism, and also offers a more personal ( but well argued) view on
such things as : environmentalism, beliefs about indigenous peoples'
relation to nature, "nature" itself .. etc etc ..
The most fundamentally challenging idea in sociobiology at the moment,
is that moral feeling would never have evolved if organisms couldn;t
have siblings - ( ie fellow family members to share a lot of your genes
with) - its the presence of genes in our siblings that allows
unselfishness to get a genetic grip ...
anyhow , the book describes all this with a lot of clarity and examples,
and its worth thinking about if you thought ethics was just something
philosophers worry about :)

Why do I feel like I'm the only one writing mail? :)

I think I'm just trying to get things going again after my stupid
argument in /Suggest stopped all other message threads in other sigs.

I think there's a limit to just how much mail a single user can take
in one day :)

Why am I writing this message in here though? I have no idea :)

I'll stop now :)
