Searching for consistency and logic within any fiction-based
TV show is never a pursuit likely to induce satisfaction.
In fact, one could wonder why any person willing to watch
Buffy would expect anything more from the show than the fluff
they are dealt.
Next you'll be wondering why Xena and Hercules mix and match
their mythologies. (Not that many people notice that, disturbingly.)

Subj: To Cable, or not to Cable.
Pay TV.. it is out, and has been for a while now.
Today I felt like spending a night of just sitting back and watching
TV <I don't have pay TV unfortunately>. So, I flicked open the TV week
and found, to my surprise, that there was only one movie on during the
normal 8:30 to 10:30pm Movie timeslot.
The thing is, now with pay TV out, the normal TV channels would have
to have suffered a great financial loss, and they pay a lot of money in
royalties to air top rate movies.
So, the question is, has pay TV caused the normal electromagnetic TV
channels to lower their stand of movies!? Has their drop in finances
caused them to limit themselves to only about 25% of the good movies
that they used to play? or, was tonight simply a bad example for me?
If they have lowered their standards of movies, then I can understand
why, but it's such a shame to see. Further, it forces people to have to
get pay TV to keep getting the good movies. As a result, us spending
money on pay TV has caused us to have to spend money on pay TV :)
Has anyone else noticed a delcine in movie quality for the normal TV
channels as well, or, is it just me talking shit again? :) :)
...NickZ.

Subj: coming soon
(as the bishop said to the actress)
I saw some shorts on The Panel t'other night, for a new
show (well, new for us) about to screen on the ABC sometime
in the next few weeks. Direct from the UK (where all the
best television is made, barring the obvious exceptions of
The Games, Larry Sanders, and The Late Show / D-Gen). In
the true tradition of all great TV comedy for this epoch,
it's a mockumentary .. the title of the show being something
like 'A day in the life of...'.
The idea is that a small crew (perhaps just the one bloke)
wanders out to follow some relatively interesting / important
(or just middle-aged and fat) person for a day. A retaliation
to the overdosing we've had in recent times of genuine (and
genuinely embarrassing) days-in-lives-of shows.
Real-life TV, my arse. Actually, that may make an interesting
half-hour. <ponders> Doubtless someone already has the rights
to it, though. Oh well, how sad, never mind.
Anyway, the shorts looked great, and hopefully I'll be able to
add it to my list of favourite comedies (most of which, possibly
disturbingly, are mockumentary style things - Larry Sanders,
The Games, Frontline, Operation Good Guys, etc).

No matter what else you do on Friday, or in the case of some of our

VCR up to tape ABC-TV, 8:00-8:30.
People Like Us - a mockumentary thingy in the style of Frontline,
Larry Sanders, The Games, The Newsroom, Operation Good Guys, etc.
The first episode, I think, so I'm going merely on speculation and
the shorts that they've deigned to show us.
If it's no good, basically, don't hassle me. If it *is* good, I'm
not going to lend you my video of it .. so you've been warned.

Subj: Why is it?
Observation on various cultures <etc>
Japanese cartoons <Anime/Manga/whatever you want to call it> seem to
have such different soundtracks from virtually everything that has come
out of America in recent years.
Now, sure, the cultures are very different, and the movies are slightly
more aleternative than you're american shoot 'em up, but I personally
believe that they are so much better because they write a dedicated
soundtrack, they're not after hit singles so the soundtracks to the
movies will sell, they're after songs that will actually fit into the
movie, and properly portray the emotion of what is going on better.
Mabye its also because they are restricted so much "acting wise" <i.e:
they can't put really really good acting into a cartoon, seriously, sure
its good, but humans can actually "act" because of mannerisms, body
language, eye contact <etc>> that they have to think and write songs
that portrey the emotions for the actors/actress's.
But yeah, thats something that I've realised :)

Subj: The Games
The Games - Special Announcements
MEMO TO ALL AUSTRALIANS
Greetings,
As you are no doubt aware, on September 15 we begin one of the
greatest enterprises ever undertaken in this country when the first
Olympic Games of the new millennium opens in Sydney. We are proud to
be hosting this great event and we are preparing what we sincerely
believe will be the biggest and most significant tribute to family
values and pharmaceutical expertise yet seen in the known universe.
At this crucial time for our nation, it is important to recognise
that these Games involve us all. A few short weeks ago the Prime
Minister, the Hon John Howard, stood with a number of other holiday
makers somewhere on the Turkish coast, at a ceremony designed to
highlight the forging of our national character. It is in that Anzac
spirit that I wish to speak to you now. During the next few months,
much will be asked of us. With the eyes of the world upon us, the
Southern Cross above us and every Australian an ambassador, we cannot
but succeed.
The following are some useful guidelines as we prepare ourselves for
this great task. Please keep this list close to your person at all
times and refer to it constantly.
1. Australia is a Bi-Cameral Monarchical Federation run by the
States and with a right of appeal to the Media. The capital is
Canberra. The principal industries are coal and the Olympics.
2. If a visitor comments on the high price of accommodation or
Olympic tickets, point out that due to strong economic management, the
Australian dollar is roughly equivalent to the American dime.
3. The reason prices seem slightly higher in some instances is
Australia's exciting new GST. The long term benefits of taxation
reform far outweigh the relatively minor inconvenience of paying $6.50
for a cup of coffee.
4. If you are with a visitor in a traffic jam in Sydney, say: "This
is very unusual. A truck must have tipped over".
5. If it rains during the period of September 15 to October 1, say:
"Goodness me. How tremendous. A benediction for Australia's rich
farmlands". If it hails, go inside or you might get killed.
6. The Aboriginal population are a happy and largely nomadic people
and while we are deeply committed to the improvement of their
desperate condition, they are perfectly well. (You might like to
mention Cathy Freeman)
7. The name of the man who built the 100 metre track is Mr Jim
Wilson of Acme Construction. He also designed and built the triathlon
track, a wide range of high quality ticketing machines, the main
runway at Sydney Airport and lanes 4 and 5 of the Olympic Swimming
Pool.
8. If anyone asks who is paying for these games, say: "No spikka de
Inglish".
9. If attending Olympic events, visitors should be advised to eat
before leaving home.
10. If attending the swimming, visitors should be advised to take a
powerful telescope and a small supply of oxygen if they are above Row F.
Bat on.

The problem is that all the action made it very un-Mission Impossible.
Remember the first movie? Ethan Hunt never actually uses a firearm. He
doesn't carry half a dozen guns and carry that many explosives. The only
explosive he carries in the first movie is that gum stuff which no-one
knows about. The only people he kills are the big bad guys.
Even with the original series they rarely went nuts with their guns. The
IMF team usually used subterfuge. They bluff their way in. They create
diversions.
Too much John Woo, not enough Mission Impossible.
On the plus side, most of the cars that got trashed were Fords. They did
trash 2 Volvos as collateral damage though. :(

Akira was the first feature manga to break out onto the international
stage, and for most of the world it was their first glimpse at this
artform.
Ghost's computer anamations are unbelivable, and only really seen at
their best on the big screen <grrr pitiful Valhalla screen size :(>
Wings of Honamesie <sp?> is another movie that stunned the international
audiences, and it is it's depth of character, and identifiable storyline
and extreeme emotive scenes that make it stand out in my life. It is
only after the third or fourth screening that you realise the huge
amount of effort that was put into the creation of the society that
Shiro comes from. This is not an action-packed special effects manga,
It is a real life drama, the thrills, the aspirations and the successes
of the common man and the impact on the fragile world from where he
came.
more's the pity it was never screened in Australia, one of tose
straight-to-video-cos-it's-imported stories :(

"But crap is everything."
Everything that lives on earth poos in some way
and that's how the cycle happens each and every day
just look at the green-green grass and the birds up in the sky
it's all here because of poo and now i'll tell you why
grass is eaten by the cattle
which is eaten by women and men
it fuses with their bodies
and becomes poo again
and that poo goes through the sewer
where it's dumped into the sea
and it's eaten by the plankton
that become the fish's meal
then that bigger fish with the poo still inside
swims up near the shore and gets eaten alive
a grizzly bear that poos on a dead piece of sand
so it can spring to life and become poo for the land
it's the poo of the antelope, the poo of the giraffe
that falls onto the earth, and becomes the blades of grass
the grass is eaten by the cattle, which comes out the other end
to make poo for the humans, and start all over again
"You see son, you're not an insignificant part of life, you ARE life."
"But how can i be that giraffe and blade of grass, and a human.
I don't control what they do."
"Just like your heart beats without your thinking about it,
so too your giraffes, and your humans, do what they do, without
even thinking about it. But it is all one life form, it is all... you."
"I think I see now..."
I'm the poo of the antelope, that flows onto the ground
becomes the grass of tomorrow, which the grazers turn around
so i'm the leg of the leopard, and the wings of the hen
which becomes dinner for the humans, and turns back to poo again
That's the circle, the circle of poo...

Ahha... all will be revealed my friend. :) I have been reading on the
net some diehard Buffy sites. I'm sure they are reading far too much
into it, but however... this is what I know..
In episode 6 they will explain Buffy's sister. And they better, cos
lets face it.. there are so many references to her being an only child
and stuff, it NEEDS explaining.
Now, apparently, they have refered to her sister in the last season.
Once in the finale (the first slayer dream one) Tarah, i think, said
something to Buffy about Little Miss Muffet.. and you recall that that
weird guy in the first sister episode said to Dawn something about curds
and wey (sp?) ... little miss muffet eating curds and wey on her tuffet
or whatever...
The other reference was to the one where Faith appears in Buffy's dream
and Buffy says "I have to go" and apparently Faith says "Yeah i know,
little sisters coming".
So obioiusly they have some huge kinda plan here, to keep the intrigue
up. OH! AND theyre going to explain Tara's past in upcoming episodes
too. Its all veryexciting really :)
That is all I have to say :)

Subj: What a Rush!
Tonight while sorting out some of my stuff, I came across a "thing" for
a play I saw when I was a kid back in 1980. I opened it up and there I
saw "Directed by Geoffrey Rush", and underneath it was "best wishes from
Geoffrey Rush "Roy"". Roy was his character in the play; the play was
called Clowneroonies.
I was so stoked when I found it, I rang my mum and told her.
Anyway, here is some info that I have on Geoffrey Rush, and remember
that at the time of print it was 1980. But it's interesting anyway.
Geoffrey Rush is best known as an actor and his theatre credits include
QTC productions - "Twelfth Night", "You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" as
Snoopy, "Godspell", "The Philanthropist", "Present Laughter", and The
Fool in "King Lear".
He studied at Jacques Lecoq school of Mime Movement and Theatre in
Paris. At Jane Street Theatre last year (1979) he played Vladimr in
"Waiting for Godot" and Dave in "On our Selection, a role he repeated
recently at Nimrod. Geoffrey was assistant director for the Queensland
Theatre Compay's open-air production of "A Midsummer Nights Dream" last
year (1979), and also directed "Right on the Night" a clown show for the
Grin and Tonic Theatrical Troupe in North Queensland. In March this
year (1980) he directed "Mirth of a Nation" at NIDA, a vaudeville
entertainment.
Well there you go, some info on Geoffrey Rush :)
Only thing is, I met him, and I don't even remember it :(
Anyway,
Serenity ;)

Subj: TV and Radio Broadcast
You said that a license was needed for TV in the old days, so I asked
Dad and here's how it worked.
Basically, government owned TV stations <the ABC> and radio stations
didn't advertise for their money. So, those who used the services were
expected to pay money to fund them. I guess a little like the bus
system where those that use them, pay.
However, they didn't know if you were using your TV/Radio to tune into
commercial or government channels, soooo, they made it that people had
to get a license to use TV/Radio to listen to any channel, to basically
pay for the government provided stations.
..and yes, they used to do random inspections <as Dad says, "yes, very
much so"> to see if you had/used a radio or TV.
Years later, they got rid of the license system and allowed the
government channels to have advertisements for funding.
That is how the story goes.
I don't know the dates however.

I just thought I would put in a good word for a TV show that is
actually worth watching once a month unlike the large amount of other
nameless shows (for example Buffy (did I say nameless?)). Last saturday
they had a bloody funny film called "Three Legged". Imagine two people
with their legs tied like in a three legged race. Then imagine them in a
small room with a cannon like device to shoot tennis balls at them. Then
imagine filming the two (adult men) dodging the balls occasinally being
hit. Who is insane enough to do that? Wood and Harrison apparently! Pure
genius if you ask me.
Also a while back, not sure if anyone else happened to catch it, was a
film called "Night of the carrots" by Priit Parn from Eastonia i belive.
It was the greatest film I've ever seen in my whole concious life! It's
just a shame there isnt always something that good on. Well... Not as
good but something close. Nothing can match "Night Of The Carrots".
It's got everything from strange men who's names can be read from their
face riding bicycles with square wheels, rabbits who try to use a
combination of voodoo and computer technology to bring down the KGB,
jello like subtances divided into x number of sections with buttons and
a deluded zebra who thinks himself to be human and wishes to oneday make
love to the fattest woman on earth.
Obviously, I like "Night of the carrots". Unfortunatly it is not an
easy film to get your hands on. I have however found a place in the US
to order it.
I remember starting this message about EatCarpet. Its good and theres
alot of fresh talent. I prefer the more comical of the films but there
are also some very emotionaly moving films capturing apparently everyday
reality in purity. Im just losing momentum here and expect to fall soon.
I assume there are some people who can actually get an almost decent
picture on sbs? Before we got our current video player reception was
horrible. But now we get a lovely crisp picture. ABC is worst of them
all having a small amount of noise.
TV is evil.
Snoopen
PS. For those who have not of a tv program, or can simply not be
bothered looking through it, EatCarpet is on Saturday nights at about
11:40 on SBS.

Subj: buffy.
Ok, for anyone who isnt interested, or didn't see the Buffy season
finale ..
DONT READ ON! I AM GOING TO SPOIL THE WHOLE THING RIGHT NOW IF
YOU DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(If you dont care, just sod off) :)
<blink> I heard a spoiler a little while ago. The spoiler being that
Buffy died in the season finale. I didn't care too much because I knew
WB had sold the rights to Buffy for at least another two seasons ..
So I knew it would be back.. and it will be. :)
From Joss himself : "the character of Buffy is dead, but the character
of Buffy will be back next season, and she will be played by Sarah
Michelle Gellar."
I checked out the net, see. :)
But anyway, back to my <blink>. I couldn't believe the final episode.
It was just weird. I bawled at the end obviously, especially when I saw
Willow and Spike's reactions, and heard the little speech Buffy gave to
Dawn. <nod>
But I've been watching old Buffy videos. I have all of season 1 and 2
on tape, and half the episodes of season 3. (the other half are on
layby). Buffy used to be better. I still love the show.. but it used to
be better. I think season 5 was a bit of a letdown. There was just so
much - it dragged on something severe. By the end of the season, I'd
actually just had enough of the storyline .. so Im glad it went out the
way it did. I actually think its kinda a cute way to finish the season..
especially since she's coming back. (I fretted at first, hoping it wasnt
gunna become "Dawn, the Vampire Slayer"!!!!!) :( :)
More importantly .. so I was talking about it with friends last night.
Now that Buffy's dead, does this mean there will be another Slayer??
Points to consider :
1) Buffy faced the Master. He killed her. Xander revived her. She was
dead for only a minute or two .. but Kendra came along. After all, if a
slayer dies, a new one is summoned to take her place. So there were 2.
2) Kendra was killed. She was not revived.
3) Faith was summoned to take Kendra's place. Faith has not been killed,
but is floating around somewhere, being a mopey fugitive type person.
4) Buffy has died again.
As far as the rules go, a new Vampire Slayer should be summoned.
Someone said something about Dawn, being of the same blood as Buffy, so
perhaps she become a Slayer .. but I dunno about that.
There should, by rules, as far as I can tell, be three Vampire Slayer
in season 6. <nod> uuuuuuuuuunless, a new Vampire Slayer is not
summoned, because Buffy is brought back to life, by the Powers That Be
as opposed to being dead for a second, and being revived.. <ponder>
Anyway, America get season 6 in about October, so we should start
getting the new episodes in January - February 2002. However,
information should be available on the net, from October or so, for
those die-hard fans.
So .. try to have a good months without Buffy .. not sure they're
going to be showing repeats out here .. But hey. I have videos, so I
will survive. :)
nerr :)
